AI-Assisted WordPress Development Without AI Dependency

Keep requirements, source and tests outside the chat so another person—or another tool—can continue the work.

The risk is undocumented dependence.

Using an AI assistant does not automatically make a website dependent on AI. A reviewed CSS change can run for years without calling a model. Dependence appears when essential behavior, knowledge or access exists only inside the assistant’s environment.

Distinguish development assistance from runtime behavior. If a visitor-facing feature calls an AI service on every request, latency, availability, cost and failure handling become part of the product. If AI helped write ordinary code, those runtime concerns may not exist.

Keep a small handoff packet.

  • The problem and the people affected.
  • Acceptance criteria, including empty and failure states.
  • The relevant source files and their change history.
  • Tests or repeatable checks with the observed result.
  • Known limitations and decisions still requiring judgment.
  • The destination and process for a release.

Write these where the project lives. A link to a long chat can be useful background, but the next maintainer should not have to reconstruct requirements from conversation fragments.

Give the assistant a bounded job.

Task: improve the empty state on the application archive.
Outcome: explain that no matches were found and offer Reset filters.
Keep: existing data model, URLs and permission behavior.
Check: no selection, one filter, conflicting filters, keyboard use.
Return: changed files, observed checks and unresolved assumptions.

This is enough structure to expose scope creep. If the proposed solution needs a new framework or analytics service, there should be a reason connected to the requirement.

Review before recording the release.

Inspect the diff for unrelated changes and new dependencies. Run the checks against both expected and awkward inputs. Have the assistant explain the change, then verify that explanation against the code.

git status --short
git diff --stat
git diff
git diff --cached

These commands help inspect the working and staged changes. Git diff reference. A successful review still needs an environment check: identify whether the next push could deploy to production.

Try continuing without the original conversation.

Give the handoff packet to another builder. Ask them to explain the feature, find its data and describe how they would change it. Where they stumble is where knowledge is still trapped.

For a school project, this can be a peer exercise. For a business, it is a continuity check. In both cases, the goal is the same: ordinary project records should carry the understanding.

See our AI policy for the responsibilities we keep with people, and Lab 003 for what our deployment records taught us.
